Hallux Vulgus (Bunion)

Hallux Valgus is a deformity where the biggest toe, also known as the hallux, moves away from the body’s midline and is rotated axially. As the condition progresses, the deviation can affect the entire forefoot structure, leading to the development of a hammer toe in the second toe.

The degree of primary deformity varies depending on the severity. In advanced stages, pain may be felt due to strained ligaments or muscular spasms caused by disordered function.

However, the deformity itself is often painless and gradually develops over time. The primary sources of discomfort are usually the secondary superficial lesions that form, such as bursitis, plantar corns, and callus.

Several treatment levels are available, including footwear choices and exercises to reduce stress through the joint in prophylactic treatment, referral for operative treatment in specific cases, and management of secondary complications with palliative treatment. Our clinicians can assist with tailoring an optimised treatment plan as needed.
